What it’s not!
This is not about making beautiful art, though you may. This is not therapy, though it is surely therapeutic. This is not an art class, though you will paint. This is not a performance and there is nothing to display, sell, or explain to anyone.
It is an intentional gathering that welcomes an aspect of ourselves that we may have been told wasn’t “good enough to be allowed to express itself. It’s a few hours, or a few days, of being present to yourself without an agenda, other than creating from the soul.
The painting becomes a mirror.
What you see there is often more impactful than anything thinking alone could have produced.
What is Paint by Wonder Intuition Painting.
Intuition Painting® is a six-phase, non-directive painting process that awakens the innate creativity within all of us, offering a safe, judgment-free space where self-expression and genuine self-discovery can unfold.
There is no technique to learn. Nothing to get right. No expectation of a beautiful piece of art to sell, display, or critique. It is about releasing ego, quieting the inner critic, and allowing your own intuition to guide the brush. Grounded in mindfulness and a real connection with your body, this spontaneous, unplanned process allows images, colors, and symbols to emerge, not from the thinking mind, but from somewhere quieter and more honest.
These visual expressions carry insight and emotion that words alone often cannot access.
You follow the brush, one mark at a time, without deciding in advance what it should become. Images appear that you didn't plan. And when the painting begins to ask for changes, something shifts, because what changes on the paper has a way of changing inside you too.
Six phases. Your own pace.
The process follows a structured arc that honors where you are emotionally and energetically as you create. You are never alone in it.
Phase 1 Center Arrive. Ground. Become present to this paper, this moment.
Phase 2 Let Go Release judgment, expectation, and the need to make something good.
Phase 3 Connect Follow the brush. Let imagery emerge without a plan.
Phase 4 Reveal Look at what appeared. Let the painting show you what it knows.
Phase 5 Transform Follow what the painting asks for. Watch what shifts.
Phase 6 Embody Carry what you discover on the paper into your daily life.
Above is an example of one my own “paintings” going through its transformation to the final message to me. We stay with one paper “canvas” throughout the process, keeping ourselves less focused on product than engagement with our inner self.
My process started with seeing fish in the water, a prompt into looking below the surface of things.
The second iteration was an expansion of the simple fish to include multiple, colorful goldfish, one of my favorite of all creatures and they gave me pure pleasure to dive into their colorful individuality. The nature of the process requires the painter to expand the “canvas” when anything goes off the page.
The third painting emerged with the message that I was leaving behind the trappings that had held me down and was finding my own individuality, maybe going beyond just being one of “the school.”
The messaging of the fourth painting kept pulling me away from that sense of individuality and by the end of that session I had manipulated the paper, torn it, glued it and transformed it to be an earth-like messenger reminding me “it isn’t always just about you!”
As I approached that challenging paper the following week, it transformed again and left me with the message, “the beauty is there if you look for it. See the wonders of the world even in the chaos.”
I am spending a lot more time focused on the beauty around me. It’s easy to overlook if we don’t make the intention to do it.
This is also an example of the Birth, Death and Rebirth we can experience in this process. Allow it to happen and see what unfolds.
Why it Works
When you stop directing and start following, the analytical mind steps back. Neuroscientists have found that breakthroughs don’t arrive when we push harder. They arrive when we soften our focus just enough for something new to surface. This process creates exactly those conditions.
The World Health Organization reviewed more than 3,000 studies on creativity and health and found that active creative engagement, not watching or consuming but making, reduces anxiety and depression, builds resilience, and improves quality of life. This is not hobby. This is health.
Who is it for?
Artists and non-artists. People who are thriving and people who are struggling. People at a crossroads, in grief, feeling stuck, or simply curious about what a few hours of unplanned painting might show them about themselves.
You don’t need to be an artist. You only need to be willing to begin.
The Lineage
Where this work comes from.
Intuition Painting® didn’t arrive from nowhere. It grew from decades of work by practitioners who believed that making art without agenda, without technique, judgment, or outcome, could reach places that talking and thinking alone cannot.
Carl Rogers Founder of person-centered therapy. His conviction that human beings carry within themselves the resources for healing and growth became the philosophical foundation for everything that followed.
Natalie Rogers Daughter of Carl Rogers. Developed the Creative Connection® process, interweaving movement, sound, painting, writing, and guided imagery as a pathway to healing. A founding figure in expressive arts therapy.
Shaun McNiff Pioneer in expressive arts therapy for more than three decades. Author of Art Heals and Art as Medicine. Championed the idea that even difficult or disturbing imagery carries inherent healing potential.
Michele Cassou and Stewart Cubley Founded the Painting Experience Studio in San Francisco in 1976. Developed process painting, the practice of painting spontaneously and without judgment, purely for exploration rather than result. Authors of Life, Paint and Passion.
Aviva Gold Developed Painting from the Source® in 1985. Montine Blank trained directly with Aviva Gold, whose work became the immediate foundation for Intuition Painting®.
Montine Blank Founder of Intuition Painting® and Life is an Art. Drawing on her training with Aviva Gold and the broader expressive arts lineage, Montine developed the six-phase certified process that Wondering Path Studio offers today.
It is in this tradition that Wondering Path Studio was founded.
